Interim Personal Mission Statement
Jan 18th
I am a twenty-something web design/development student studying concurrently at DeVry University and Solano College, in my sophomore year . I’ve always wanted to be a DeVry student since graduating high school. Now after learning the gist about how things work in college, both academically and financially, I have fulfilled that dream.
I’ve already achieved a Job Direct Certificate from Solano College. Now that I’m here at DeVry, I would like to better my knowledge at web development, as well as to establish a way to market myself to employers or clients once I get out in the workforce. With the degrees and certificates I get from college, I would like to either run a moderately profitable web design business, emphasizing on accessibility, or work for an Internet startup company.
However, I have a couple of obstacles which are either preventing me or making it very difficult to achieve that goal. The first is my tendency being distracted or not choosing the right priorities. I am also diagnosed with general anxiety, and it shows whenever I am in any unfamiliar situation. Because of this, industry-related social gathering events and job interviews are very difficult to do and I feel it would hinder my chances of landing high level jobs.
Problem Solving for Success
I’ll focus on the distraction/priority obstacle since it will eventually have a decisive effect on my academic career. My present state is that I tend to chose activities that distract me from getting my work finished effectively. My desired state is to finish my work effectively, so I can enjoy the activities that would otherwise distract me.
Because the temptation to distract myself is always present when I feel something will be difficult, I figured that I had to avoid it and focus on making the difficult easy. So I plan to remove myself from all possible distractions, such as web browsers (or tabs set to YouTube, Twitter and other websites). This clears the slate for me to use all the tools to finish the work effectively, and keeping in mind of how my colleagues would feel if they found that I’m doing much less effort in the project than they are putting into.
I first must understand that choosing to use my time on the distraction means that I chose not to do the project. The reason I turn to these distractions is because they use less energy than the project itself, they are comfortable. I need to figure out ways to make the project more comfortable and appealing. To make it more comfortable, I need to look at things step-by-step. Turn one hard task into many easier tasks. Also to make it more appealing, I consider the reward for completing the task. Even though the distraction may feel like a treat, it gets you nothing in the end. In order for me to be absolutely sure that I will succeed, I plan would set aside a time dedicated to the project. This time should be free of all possible distractions such as favorite TV shows. If I can put my full attention on something, all my energy will go to it, and the project will be completed faster.
Role in Leadership
For a team project, I was in charge of scheduling meetings and appointments. Because I assigned these meetings to reoccur at certain points in time, I minimized the need to reschedule at short notice, because my teammates knew what time to come into the meeting. I also provided a printable schedule so they can refer to it in case they need to. As far as the meetings go, I attended most of them and given input that was valuable enough to be used in the team project. However, I wish I was able to attend all of them as well as give full focus to them.
As far as my job goes, I’m still studying the skills and concepts to be used in the workforce. I have already learned enough tech skills to work with. I also found a niche, in case the market becomes saturated. There are many people in the Bay Area who want to be web developers, but how many want to specialize in accessibility? I have created a website called CaptioNet.info that focuses on accessibility.
Within 5 years, I plan to use the skills that I obtain from both college and studying on trends related to accessibility to make full use of CaptioNet’s services. I will become the go-to person when it comes to communicating through the use of the Web with the disabled, whether they are blind or deaf. As the introduction to the site reads “The Internet has become a place where many video bloggers, citizen journalists and other amateur video producers could express themselves and make their voices heard. However, those who have limited or full loss of hearing cannot hear their messages”. I want to provide a way to interpret that voice into something they could understand.
Personal Mission Statement
Upon graduation from DeVry University, I will overcome the distractions that prevent me from obtaining a career in the Web development field. I will use the technical and team building skills I learned from college to assist my potential employers to communicate with the disabled through the Web.

Facebook is limiting your friend’s news feeds
Oct 25th
I’ve noticed a lot of changes when it comes to Facebook over the past 3 or so days. Some have to do with the way you upload pictures to the site, and others have to do with the “Live feed” and “News Feed” features. Unfortunately, they are pulling a YouTube on us. I’m not absolutely sure why, and I think it’s to reserve load time, but they have blocked all your friend’s news feeds with the exception of the 250 they recommend. If you have less that 250, this is fine, but for those who have more than that, here’s how to fix the problem.
Go to your HOME page. Make sure your news feed shows LIVE FEED. Then scroll to bottom, click ” Edit Options,” You will see your NEWS FEED SETTINGS. Change the 250 to 5000 for Facebook’s max friend limit and your feed will work right again…

Trying to integrate two domains while creating a brand new site using Windows based hosting is fun. At least the redirect system finally works. If you have an old link to any page on leonbacud.com, it should redirect to the same file on the new leonbacud.info site. Same with the blog. I can’t wait till the new site releases. It’s gonna be awesome…
The Realness of Virtual School
May 9th
Now I’m trying to get a real life college degree in Web Graphic design at a real life university called DeVry. Because it is very expensive both financial and time wise, I’m sitting at my computer taking two “online classes”. At this time, the only way I could help get a real life degree is to go to “virtual school”.
Virtual school is a much different experience than real life school. I can go and learn whenever I want, and I don’t have to put much expense trying to learn the same content as if I were to pull up a website at home. But there is practically no contact with my instructors or (granted they’re not on the real world campus). My lectures consist of handout-like text that was probably recycled ad-nauseum over the past 3 or so years. And conversations consist of mid 1990s based threaded forum posts which are very difficult to sift through.
Other than the quizzes and assignments, online school is very lonely. The ease of speaking out your input on what goes on in class has been replaced by typing words that first must be thought out in detail. Also it’s difficult when there are 20 others in class with blobs of text. If it were spoken word, you’ll have to listen to them or at least try to tone them out. With threaded discussions, it’s a matter of “should I put my time into this?” Same with lectures. I have to do 40 or so pages of textbook reading. Sometimes It’s great to use the other senses to bring in information. Microsoft Mary doesn’t do the job well either.
In this day of higher technology, can we make use of video? I can listen to my teacher, and I could speak to my classmates as if it were a real classroom. I mean, that’s how news reporters communicate; through two way video feeds.
