The Realness of Virtual School

Now I’m trying to get a real life college degree in Web Graphic design at a real life university called DeVry. Because it is very expensive both financial and time wise, I’m sitting at my computer taking two “online classes”. At this time, the only way I could help get a real life degree is to go to “virtual school”.

Virtual school is a much different experience than real life school. I can go and learn whenever I want, and I don’t have to put much expense trying to learn the same content as if I were to pull up a website at home. But there is practically no contact with my instructors or (granted they’re not on the real world campus). My lectures consist of handout-like text that was probably recycled ad-nauseum over the past 3 or so years. And conversations consist of mid 1990s based threaded forum posts which are very difficult to sift through.

Other than the quizzes and assignments, online school is very lonely. The ease of speaking out your input on what goes on in class has been replaced by typing words that first must be thought out in detail. Also it’s difficult when there are 20 others in class with blobs of text. If it were spoken word, you’ll have to listen to them or at least try to tone them out. With threaded discussions, it’s a matter of “should I put my time into this?” Same with lectures. I have to do 40 or so pages of textbook reading. Sometimes It’s great to use the other senses to bring in information. Microsoft Mary doesn’t do the job well either.

In this day of higher technology, can we make use of video? I can listen to my teacher, and I could speak to my classmates as if it were a real classroom. I mean, that’s how news reporters communicate; through two way video feeds.

AaahnoldBucks!

Picture of me with AaahnoldBucks

There’s a really serious problem with California government. I see it when I go down 80 and find a bunch of road construction trucks parked in the corner doing nothing. I see it when they start cutting back on everything. It’s called our budget, which I thought was passed a few months ago. Now here we are with Aaahnold saying he’ll be sending out IOUs instead of checks for stuff like tax returns and School grants. Well guess what? I’ve got a couple ArnoldBucks IOU dollars! And you will too!

Since I’m getting financial aid that will support my books and supplies at Solano College, I wonder if they’ll accept this. I mean, it’s bad enough that they’re being hit with budget cuts left and right. Maybe the bookstore will accept this.

If only our legislators start doing their jobs right, we wouldn’t be in this mess. When a certain legislator, Charles Calderon said “We are the California Legislature. We can do whatever we want”, he better start thinking at what price. I blame legislators like him for our state’s financial problems.

Testing out the new Windows Live Writer

When I tried to run IE 8 RC1, it told me that some of my old “accelerators” are old and are disabled. Little did I realize that ALL of the plug-ins were disabled! After looking around for about 30 minutes, I read that whole help file at MS.com and found that I have to download Windows Live Essentials. I’ve heard that there was going to be a web based version of MS Word out eventually, and that it had something to do with Windows Live. I found a “Windows Live Writer”. Little did I know that it was a blog writer. So now I have a reason to post text blogs.

Update: There is also a feature in Microsoft Word where you can upload blog entries to that as well. It is not as good as this one.

Morbid humor

I’ve been told that I’m not funny. This is proof. But what is funny is how this is post ID 666.

Merry Christmas!

The start of a new look to leonbacud.com

As you can see, I’m looking for new ideas for the site. The first few things you’d notice is how I dumped the web design final exam layout I placed at the beginning of this year with a redirect to my blog. At the blog itself, there’s a theme I used called “Seagull” that I’m going to adapt over the next few months. After looking through a number of high-quality themes, I found this one to be very detailed, with out being over the top. Thanks to the person at the bottom for releasing this. Hopefully I can take it and make it even better, or at least more “LBMixPro”.
